City of Cape Town, which is in the process of procuring up to 200 MW of renewable energy from independent power producers (IPPs), expects to initiate a utility-scale battery energy storage
A Residential Solar Battery System in Cape Town enables you to operate independently from the grid for 6 to 8 months of the year. It consists of Solar Panels, an Inverter and a Lithium Battery.

In November 2023, South Africa announced preferred bidders for the first Battery Energy Storage IPP Procurement Programme tender, which – if all implemented in full – would add 360 MW of dispatchable battery storage capacity to the national grid, and are now expected to enter into power purchase agreements (PPAs) negotiations with Eskom.
