Samoa Observer | Digicel reaches milestone with 20 5G sites
With 20 live 5G sites, the whole urban area and surrounding suburbs of Apia, residential, commercial, and public places, are now covered with Digicel Samoa''s 5G network.
Digicel Samoa announced on Monday that it has officially kicked off its rollout of 5G services with five 5G sites going live in the Apia CBD. The sites cover the Levili Data Centre, FMFMII, NFP building, Tatte building and Frankie mall. Digicel customers with 5G-compatible devices will be able to use 5G in those areas, the company said.
Digicel Samoa has not given a timeline for when 5G will expanded to the rest of Apia and Samoa in general. Digicel's sole competitor, Vodafone Samoa, said in March that it plans to launch 5G ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2024 in October.
Jae Won, Head of APAC at Nokia, highlighted the company's support for Digicel Samoa in this crucial network infrastructure project. He praised Nokia's AirScale portfolio for its ability to support various deployment scenarios and frequency bands, enabling enhanced mobile broadband services through 5G technology.
This development marks a significant milestone for the telecommunications company, known for its commitment to innovation and network reliability. Established in 2006, Digicel Samoa has been a pioneer in transforming the telecommunications landscape in Samoa.
