Lithium-Ion Battery Fires: Myth vs. Reality
Myth: You can use any compatible charger for a lithium-ion battery. Reality: Only use the charger designed for your specific battery. Incorrect charging can cause the battery to expel its charge
Image: National Grid. Fire incidents have been reported within weeks of each other at two separate lithium-ion battery storage projects in the US state of New York. No one appears to have been injured in either incident, but both look set to be offline for a period of time while investigations are conducted.
Most events had in common that the lithium ion batteries installed in the BESS where somehow driven to vent battery gas and transition to thermal runaway, which is a process that releases large amounts of energy. Thermal runaway is strongly associated with exothermic chemical reactions.
Battery energy storage system (BESS) provider Viridi recently hosted a live fire demonstration to show how properly engineered cell modules can prevent flame propagation. “The real problem is not the thermal runaway event,” Jon M. Williams, CEO Viridi told pv magazine USA. “It's the propagation of a fire from one cell to another.
