Main Energy Storage Sites in Auckland, New Zealand: Key
Summary: Auckland is rapidly advancing its energy storage infrastructure to support renewable energy adoption and grid stability. This article explores the main energy storage sites in
Meridian Energy has officially opened New Zealand's first large-scale grid battery storage system at Ruakākā, the first of its kind, and a milestone in the country's renewable energy infrastructure development. The Ruakākā Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) delivers 100 megawatts (MW) of maximum output with 200 MW-hour storage capacity.
New battery energy storage system (BESS) will discharge energy at a split second to significantly improve security of energy supply to New Zealanders. The 100-megawatt (MW) battery to provide enough electricity at peak demand to power the equivalent of 44,000 homes.
Genesis Energy's Huntly Power Station in northern Waikato is New Zealand's largest power station – with 1000 MW of coal- and gas-fired generators and 435 MW of gas-only generators, it supplies around 17% of the country's electricity. There is a gas-fired power station in Taranaki at Stratford (585 MW).
The remainder is mainly supplied by gas and a small amount by a large coal-fired power station located near New Zealand's largest city, Auckland. The two main islands are interconnected for electrical distribution by high voltage DC cables.
